When a jewel becomes a shared secret
Share
One day, a young couple entered the studio. They were shy, almost embarrassed. He spoke first:
"We would like two identical rings, but with a detail that no one can see. A detail just for us."
I asked them what they imagined. The young woman took out a small folded piece of paper, on which was written a barely legible word in Arabic. It was a sentence they had said to each other the day they met.
"We would like it to be engraved on the inside of the rings. Even if no one reads it, we will know it's there."
I accepted immediately. A few days later, when they got their rings back, they looked at each other with an emotion I will never forget. These rings were not just any jewelry: they had become their shared secret .
This isn't the first time I've seen this kind of request. Sometimes it's a date discreetly inscribed on the back of a pendant. Sometimes it's initials engraved in Tifinagh, incomprehensible to others but precious to the wearer.
A client once asked me to engrave a design of a small star, symbolizing a promise she had made to her late brother. "No one needs to know," she told me. "Only I will know." When she returned to collect her necklace, she had tears in her eyes.
That's what I love about this job. Behind every piece of jewelry, there's a story others don't see. 18-karat gold shines for the world to see, but sometimes it hides an even more beautiful light: that of an intimate secret.
I think that's why jewelry touches us so much. It's both visible and invisible. We wear it to be beautiful, but we keep it for what it represents. A memory, a promise, a confidence.
I myself have a pendant that no one notices. On the outside, it's smooth and discreet. But on the back, I engraved two letters that only my husband and I know. Every time I touch it, I think of him. And even if no one around me understands, this piece of jewelry has become my secret .
A piece of jewelry can be a coded message, a silent love note, or an unexplained memory. This shared secret, hidden in gold, becomes true luxury: possessing something no one else can guess.
At Azor, we know that these details sometimes matter more than anything. Because an engraved secret remains intact, protected, like gold itself. And it endures with the same strength, until one day, perhaps, it is passed on to someone who will carry its memory forward.
